Washington’s new Antoine Fuqua-directed action thriller The Equalizer straight equalized its competition at theaters last weekend, pulling in $35 million domestically to beat out No. 2Maze Runner ($17.5 million) and No. 3 The Boxtrolls ($17.2 million).

At 59, Denzel Washinton is still one of the most reliable draws in Hollywood. The Equalizer cost a reported $55 million in production, and is well on its way to being a solid hit.

The rest of the top 10 at the box office were mostly movies entering their second or third weeks in release, including No. 4 This Is Where I Leave You ($7 million), No. 5 Dolphin Tale($4.8 million), No. 6 No Good Deed ($4.6 million) and No. 7 A Walk Among the Tombstones($4.2 million).
