The verdict is in! Oscar Pistorius has been sentenced to five years at Kgosi Mampuru II prison in Pretoria for killing girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine’s Day last year.

Pistorius was told by Judge Thokozile Masipa: “I am of the view that a non-custodial sentence would send a wrong message to the community. On the other hand, a long sentence would not be appropriate either, as it would lack the element of mercy.”

He also received a three year suspended sentence for negligently discharging a firearm in a crowded restaurant. The suspension is based on the grounds that he is not found guilty in another crime involving a firearm.

The International Paralympic Committee has said Pistorius will be banned from athletics competitions until 2019.
