Legendary Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin recently sat down with The Wall Street Journal to discuss her cover album, Aretha Franklin Sings The Great Diva Classics. Touching on everything from how the album concept came about to how “ridiculous” auto-tune is, Franklin discussed a few of the artists she’s covered, including Adele, whose “Rolling In the Deep” appears on her new project.

“Well let’s see, ‘Rolling In The Deep,’ I liked it. When I first heard it I liked it,” Franklin said. “I saw some of Adele’s promo and a lot of young kids were on the bus, they were singing it, they were having a really, really wild good time.”

The conversation then shifted to Franklin’s opinion of a few other modern divas, including Taylor Swift (who Franklin says has “nice gowns”) and reigning rap queen Nicki Minaj, to whom the soul singer gave a very brief answer.

“Nicki Minaj, hmm, I’m gonna pass on that one,” she said.

Franklin also talks President Obama, her fear of flying, her creative process and what profession she would she would have taken up instead of singing.
