Machel Montano intends to exit the International Soca Monarch competition, “like a boss,” leaving as an undefeated champion when he takes the ISM stage in battle for the final time tonight, or rather at some time in the opening hours of tomorrow. The finals of the International Power and Groovy Soca Monarch competitions take place tonight at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Port of Spain.

Many soca music fans are of the opinion that retaining his Power Soca title tonight will be a cakewalk for Montano because public opinion is that this year’s finalist line-up in both categories is the poorest in a long while. When the finalists were revealed following the semis a couple weeks ago comments on social media was that “Fantastic Friday” as the finals is referred to will be a, “couch event.”

The person seeming to be the biggest threat to Montano is Hottmouth Granny Gladys (Nikki Crosby) with her song, “Go Granny.” Granny has been sending crowds wild at fetes throughout the Carnival and people are saying that she will prove a challenge for Montano. Crosby said that she is still in shock over how the act has taken off because she did the song just for the fun of it and did not expect that people would have loved it as much as they seem to.

“I told people that Granny is bigger than I think. Her presence makes people laugh and we do need that now as a country. I and the nation as a whole went through a real dark time with Marcia (the murder of Marcia Henville). I couldn’t stop to grieve for her so I turned it around and dedicated Granny’s performances to her. It got me through the madness,” Crosby told the Express last week.
