TRINIDAD and Tobago soca star 5 Star Akil gave an unexpected but well-received twist to his performance at Bacchanal Fridays at Mas Camp in St Andrew, on Friday night.

“I have to thank Jamaica for coming out and supporting me as this is the first time I’m working as a solo headliner,” 5 Star Akil told the Jamaica Observer.

5 Star Akil’s performance got off to a less than energetic start, but by the second song the crowd warmed to him as he riffed back and forth with them. He ran through his own songs To Meh Heart and Noise moving on quickly to a medley of old and modern soca. Then his act took an unexpected musical direction.

“I had planned to fuse the music,” 5Star Akil said later.

With the crowd’s attention beginning to wane, he fell back on his DJ skills and became a hype-man of sorts working with DJ Buns, who had been playing his backing tracks. To the audience’s delight, he hyped up a variety of the latest rap music. This brought the energy back up as he talked up songs like Rae Sremmurd’s No Type and OT Genasis’ CoCo.

The vibes soared through the roof when 5 Star Akil started on dancehall, begging the partygoers to teach him how to do the shampoo dance. He then brought it back around to soca, singing his own songs to close out the show.

“I’m already preparing for 2016 by heading into the studio to work on three new songs,” he said at the end of the night.
