Machel Montano’s hour long appearance on the LargeUp “Sounds from the Caribbean” stage at South by Southwest last Friday has gained him the attention of Rolling Stones magazine who voted him “Best Buzz Beater in their “50 Best Things we saw at SXSW 2015).

The Monk gave them a taste of true Trini party protocol when at 1:48pm, he asked for one more song and proceeded into a medley of hits, transitioned from Major Lazer’s “Sound Bang,” to his own massive Road March title “Ministry of Road” and closed the show (and the event, which was carded to end at 2pm) with “Is Carnival.”

This is the second successive year that Rolling Stone Magazine has made mention of the LargeUp stage and highlighted a soca artiste in their lineup as the best thing to see at SXSW, one of the biggest and most noteworthy annual music festivals in the US.

LargeUp, an online Caribbean music and lifestyle publication, has been doing its part to showcase Caribbean talent and is steadily gaining headway into the US based Caribbean fan base. Fans of Caribbean music and industry executives packed the Palm Door on Sixth patio to capacity for their event which also featured Trinidadian Rapso King Ataklan, LargeUp’s own Echo Slim, Mr. Vegas, Kabaka Pyramid, Gyptian and Angela Hunte.

LargeUp co-founder and Dj, Deejay Gravy said: “The Caribbean people—rarely a presence at rock-centric South by Southwest—came out the woodwork in the rain to show their support, wave their flags and cheer on their favorite artist. There was an overall feeling that we were all a part of the first major event of its kind at SXSW, as if history was being made with each moment, and it was.”
