Bill Maher announced last night on his show Real Time with Bill Maher that he’s petitioning to make 4/20 a national holiday. Because he’s like totally hip and gets youths, you guys! Maher is known for being controversial, but is it really even edgy to support marijuana legalization? (Spoiler: no.)

Maher put up a petition on Change.org to celebrate every stoner’s favorite holiday; it’s already got 3,401 signatures out of the required 5,000. Not surprisingly, there are also several Change.org petitions dedicated to getting Maher fired. In any case, marijuana is now legal—at least partially—in 24 states, but we don’t see Congress scrambling to celebrate drugs any time soon.

To further his cause, Maher read from ‘Twas the Night Before 4/20, complete with patron saints Willie Nelson and Snoop Dogg. “If we can set days aside to pay tribute to trees, a rodent or a space ghost, we can certainly designate one day to officially recognize a true American institution,” Maher wrote on his petition.
