After an upset for fans who were expecting The Weeknd and Lauryn Hill to perform at this year’s Grammy Awards, the two artists finally graced the stage together on Friday night (Feb. 19). In a victory lap after earning two gold gramophones, The Weeknd performed his single “In The Night” on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Fans were gifted with a surprise in the middle of the song, as Hill graced the stage to help belt out the Beauty Behind The Madness track.

Following her missed appearance on the Grammys stage, reps for Hill released a statement to clarify that her performance was never confirmed. Due to other commitments, the singer said she was unsure if she would be able to make it, and noted that it should not have been advertised to viewers.

“Any performance that could have happened was never confirmed, and should not have been advertised as such,” the statement read. “Ms. Hill was invited to do a collaboration with an artist she appreciates. The performance was intended to be a surprise and unfortunately due to its last minute nature, was unable to come to fruition.”

The Weeknd and Lauryn Hill’s Tonight Show should serve as a worthy recompense for the mix-up. Backed by a band and complete with mystifying lights, the two delivered a stunning rendition. Following the performance, The Weeknd took to Twitter to call it the “most important experience” of his life.
