Gyptian (formal name Windel Beneto Edwards) has announced that he will no longer be represented by VP Records, an independent label based in New York.

This announcement was made through a media release, which sited contractual disagreement as the reason for the split.

“It has been a great journey with special memories made and I’m thankful for all the opportunities, but unfortunately I have decided to part ways with VP Music Group,” the release read.

It further stated that Gyptian, who was signed to VP Records since January of 2008, will now be releasing music under his own label, Ryte Dyrekshan Records.

“It’s time I get back to doing what I love which is making music, and time for my fans to hear from me again so I can get on the road and see them. They’ve been asking and begging for new music, time to make that happen,” the release continued.

Gyptian’s albums include My Name is Gyptian (2006); I Can Feel Your Pain (2008); Hold You (2010); and Sex, Love and Reggae (2013), which debuted at number one on the Billboard Reggae Chart.
