The people of Japan have long had an affinity for Caribbean culture, especially that of Jamaica, with reggae and dancehall being a feature for some three decades. Recently the Japanese have begun to embrace soca music.

Earlier in the 2000s thereabouts Japanese DJ, selectorHemo as well as Japanese dancehall queen Junko visited Trinidad during Carnival and were hosted by Machel Montano. This not only led to Japan being introduced to much more of soca music and the artistes, but whet their appetite for more of everything Soca.

It should be noted that Japanese people have already been regular visitors to Trinidad carnival and now play the steelpan, but through selectorHemo’s visit, they were exposed to more of the culture. Now they wanted to experience the energy, vibe and sweet madness of soca music at home in Japan.

Machel Montano recently completed his first tour of Japan playing a number of dates and venues and brought the Caribbean vibes directly to the people of Japan.
