Two teams involved in 2019/20 Concacaf Nations League Qualifying were in action over the weekend as St. Vincent and the Grenadines and Barbados played a pair of friendlies in Kingstown, St Vincent.

Last Friday the St Vincent and Grenadines Under-20 team squared off against Barbados and impressed in a 4-3 victory. The Bajan Tridents jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first half through Antoine Greaves and Ackeel Applewhaite, only to see the hosts draw level shortly before half-time thanks to scores from Carlos Solomon and Gidson Francis. Back came the Barbadians and they took a 3-2 lead with a Ray Francis goal early in the second stanza, but the joy was short-lived as Dondre Charles levelled soon thereafter, followed by Solomon’s second of the game which turned out to be the match-winner for the young Vincy Heat side.

Two days later Barbados was back in action, this time against SVG’s senior team. After conceding four goals in the previous encounter, a much more defensively compact Barbados side took the field producing a scoreless first half. Three minutes into the second half though, St Vincent and the Grenadines carved out a 1-0 lead when Dennis Prescott pounced on the rebound of a blocked shot and fired in for the goal. The Barbados still provided stiff resistance the rest of the way and allowed its attack to strike back, which is exactly what Raheem Sargeant did in second half stoppage time with a goal to earn the 1-1 draw.

Despite the result, Barbados is winless in its last eight matches. The Bajan Tridents return to action in the CNL on October 13 at El Salvador, while St Vincent and the Grenadines will travel to French Guiana on October 11.
