Trinidadian Soca legend, Machel Montano, is among 5 honorees set to be awarded by the University of Trinidad and Tobago this month.

The ‘Soca Kingdom’ artist will receive an Honorary Doctorate of Arts on November 14th or November 15th, the days the university’s graduation ceremony will take place. Machel’s mother, Elizabeth Montano, shares in her son’s joy as she herself at age 67 just received her Masters’ Degree in Cultural Studies from UWI’s St. Augustine Campus in Trinidad. Mother Montano plans to publish her thesis as a book based on her famous son and is titled “The Making of Monk Monte: Creativity and Commodification in Trinidad and Tobago popular culture.”

Other awardees to be awarded by the UTT are: former national footballer and cricketer Alvin Corneal, former Parliamentarian Roy Augustus, engineer Leo Martin and poet Eintou Pearl Springer. A total of 1,700 UTT students will be awarded Undergraduate and Postgraduate degrees during this time. Two ‘Master of Philosophy’ and seven ‘Doctor of Philosophy’ Degrees will also be presented.
