The Golden Globes award show is very selective of their nominations each year and they have never viewed a superhero movie as dramatic enough to be nominated for the ‘best drama’ award until now.

Black Panther has rightfully made history in the film industry and the box office-breaking film is on it’s way to make some more history. Black Panther is officially the first superhero movie to be nominated for the ‘best drama’ Golden Globe and with the strong support team behind the blockbuster, it may just win. The 2019 nominations were announced this morning and Black Panther appears in a number of categories.

The film, which is the highest-grossing solo superhero film of all time, earned 2 other nominations for Best Original Song for Kendrick Lamar and SZA’s “All the Stars” and Best Original Score for composer Ludwig Göransson’s work on the film. Director Ryan Coogler officially signed on to direct Black Panther 2 back in October. In September, Disney launched a “for your consideration” campaign for the film, asking the Academy to consider the film in 16 categories for the 2019 Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director for Coogler, and Best Actor for Chadwick Boseman. Black Panther’s Golden Globes nominations bring it that much closer to becoming the first Marvel film to win an Oscar.
