Da Brat has weighed in on the whole R. Kelly saga and although the rapper has a good relationship with Kelly, she still tried to be fair and honest.

The Chicago rapper was interviewed at the Trumpet Awards in Atlanta on Saturday (Jan. 19), and the current radio host had an interesting take when asked about the fallout from the whole Surviving R. Kelly docu-series. The topic is a difficult one to touch on for Da Brat, as she knows the singer more than most. “That’s s a rough one,” she responded when asked her take. “I do think he needs help. I love him. I grew up with him. He’s kind of like family.”

Kelly and Brat went to the same high school and were taught by the same music teacher. She admits she’s never seen anything out of order with the singer. But she also questions why a parent would let their child be around an accused pedophile. “I’ve never seen him do anything bad, but I don’t believe these people are lying,” Brat added. “But at the same time, where is the parents? I think he needs help, for sure. I love him. I hope he don’t get mad at me. And I think the parents need to take responsibility. Where is your 14-year-old child? Why are you there? There’s something wrong with that.” She, however, will not be participating in the Mute R. Kelly movement. “I can’t stop listening to the music,” she said.
